A division between east and western sections of the basin is apparent, with the western areas having low levels of evaporation because of little soil moisture content. The highest evaporation estimates occur from Aug to Dec, during this period is when temperatures are highest. In recent years urban and agriculture pressures have increased within the Murray Darling basin; leading to high extraction rates which reduce river flow in a region that already experiences high levels of evaporatiotranspiration.
