Mackenzie River Basin Freshwater for January 1985 - 1999

Runoff in the Mackenzie is low primarily because it receives little precipitation as shown by the rainfall maps. Additionally the falling precipitation is in the form of snow which accumulates over the winter months, during the spring months (May – June) run off is highest due to snow melt within the basin, and input from the eastern slopes of the Rocky mountains. During the period of June to Nov. the tributary channels are free from ice and water is able to flow freely. This is reflected in the runoff maps as during the winter months (Nov to April) runoff is at a minimum.
