Ganges Brahmaputra River Basin Soil Moisture for January 1985 - 1999

The western reaches of the Ganges-Brahmaputra basin are predominantly dry as this area receives little rainfall. From May onwards see an increase in soil moisture levels which coincides with the monsoon period bringing increased rainfall. Soil moisture levels are seen to rise from western to eastern side of the basin, following the progression of the arriving rainfall. From November onwards there is a lessening of soil moisture linked to evaporation and a lack of precipitation. El Nino events are known to cause dry conditions in this region and for August 1987 & 1992 soil moisture estimates were lower than other years.
