Mackenzie River Basin Soil Moisture for January 1985 - 1999

In general the lower reaches of the river has a high moisture content and the source or upper reaches are lower soil moisture. The soil moisture in the Mackenzie is high mainly because of the large low lying delta that forms in the lower reaches of the river. The delta formation is observable from space and during the summer many small lakes are visible. Taking this into account in conjunction with the evaporation maps, it is apparent that the summer months have higher evaporation at a time when the soil moisture is greater owing to melt from snow and ice.
