Rhine River Basin Soil Moisture for January 1985 - 1999

In general the Rhine basin has good levels of soil moisture with over 50% saturation estimated for most of the year. Only in the very upper reaches are lower levels estimated, and here topography is important as the mountainous Alpine region has a low ability to retain moisture. One factor maintaining relative high soil moisture levels are the evaporation estimates which are linked to temperate temperatures.
