Nile River Basin Rainfall in Average Year

A clear zonation pattern is visible where the lower reaches receive very low or no rainfall. This is consistent with the desert conditions through which the Nile flows. From the confluence with Atbara River (Sudan) Northwards river flow diminishes because of the high evaporation in the arid region through which it flows. In contrast the highlands of the upper reaches of the river receive much higher rainfall amounts. The rainfall input from the upper reaches of the Nile are the main source maintaining flow in the Nile.
